What Preventative Meds Do Cats Need?

Preventative Care for Cats

Preventative care is an integral part of keeping your cat healthy. Preventative methods can catch any medical problems in your cat before they become troublesome. At South Granville Animal Hospital in Creedmoor, NC, our team of veterinarians can help. We will inspect your cat for parasites, joint problems, infections, respiratory problems, and other medical conditions.

What Is Preventative Care?

Preventative care is a proactive health approach for your cat. It includes techniques and treatments used to avoid diseases. The most important thing for pet owners is to get routine wellness checks for their cats. Our vets will look for any changes in your pet’s weight or vitals. We can also check for arthritis or other conditions in older cats. We will also look for signs of allergies. On top of this, there are several preventative medicines that your cat needs.

Vaccines

Just like in humans, vaccinations for cats train their immune systems to recognize a new bacterial or viral infection and fight it. Cat vaccinations include core and non-core vaccines.

Feline Core Vaccines

Feline core vaccines are the vaccines that every cat needs to get. They include:

  • Feline Herpesvirus 1 (FHV1)
  • Feline Panleukopenia Virus (FPV)
  • Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
  • Feline Rabies Virus Vaccine
  • Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV - kittens)

Feline Non-Core Vaccines

Feline non-core vaccines are not mandatory for every cat. These vaccines include:

  • Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Vaccine
  • Feline Chlamydia Vaccine
  • Feline Bordetella Vaccine
  • Feline Infectious Peritonitis Vaccine

Optional vaccines are recommended if your cat is living in a high-risk area. Our veterinarians will help you determine the vaccines to give your cat, depending on your location.

Parasite Prevention Medicines

Cats need parasite control medicines to avoid internal and external parasites. Common internal parasites for cats include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, protozoa (like toxoplasmosis), heartworms, flukes, and lungworms. Cats living in warm climates or outdoors need parasite prevention medications at least annually. Our vets also recommend routine deworming meds for cats.

The typical external parasites that attack cats include fleas, ear mites, ticks, and mange mites. We have monthly parasite control meds for ticks and fleas. Our veterinarians will create a specific parasite control plan for your cat.
