Influenza Vaccine (Doggie Flu)

Man’s best friend can be a bit of a handful with their propensity for finding all manner of weird things to eat and sniff.  As such, when our dogs are feeling poorly, we might have difficulty ascertaining what is wrong. What many do not know is that our furry, four-legged family members are susceptible to catching doggie flu. Although doggie flu is untreatable, beyond introducing elements to help speed your dog’s recovery such as fluids and the like, there are vaccinations available that aim to stop the spread of this respiratory influenza. These shots are the best preventative care possible to stop dogs from catching and spreading doggy influenza. Here at South Granville Animal Hospital in Creedmoor, our team of caring health professionals has the knowledge and skills to help.

Influenza Vaccine (Doggie Flu)

What is Doggie Flu?

Canine influenza, or doggie flu, comes in two strains in the United States referenced as H3N8 and H3N2. Differences include origins and quarantine requirements. The former originated in horses and made the jump to the canine world roughly around 2004. The latter variant began in Asia where scientists believe that influenza jumped from birds to dogs.

Either of these cases indicates that the disease is highly contagious and not prone to staying in one spot when it comes to species. The good news is that morbidity is extremely low, but this does not mean preventative care should be disregarded. The best way to help your animal is to have it vaccinated against canine influenza.
